While there are many additional institutes and nanotechnology research programs we hope to share with our colleagues in China, we believe that for this first meeting a focus on these two crucial areas in nanoscience might serve as the best introduction to NIH initiatives.NIH Institute Directors from NCI and NIEHS have jointly agreed to help support the first U.S.-China Nanomedicine Symposium, and to provide an initial platform for Chinese and American scientists to share information and establish new collaborations in this exciting and rapidly developing area of research.NCI and NIEHS have committed to financially support the travel expenses of selected top level scientists and nano policy experts in nanomedicine to attend this symposium.
We would like to note that the idea for this exciting collaboration originated in generative scientific exchanges between Dr. Xing-Jie Liang, Director, Nano-Medicine and Nano-Biotechnology Laboratory at the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology, in Beijing, China, and Dr. Robert Blumenthal, Director of the Center for Cancer Research Nanobiology Program, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, in Frederick, Maryland, U.S.A.Together, Drs. Liang and Blumenthal helped developed the vision for this trans-national symposium, secured support and established a Steering Committee of senior Chinese and U.S. scientists
.
We are honored to co-sponsor this symposium with our esteemed Chinese colleagues from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, the National Science Foundation of China, and a number of great Research Universities and Research Institutes. We very much look forward to convening a scientifically inspiring meeting, and to collaboratively build new bridges of friendship and collaboration in nanoscience.
